I Speak English. I’m Not American or British…Can I Teach English Abroad?

This is a very common question I’ve received on many occasions…

I speak English and I even have a degree in English, but I’m not from America or the U.K. Can I get a job teaching ESL in Korea?

The answer to this question is…it’s possible. Anything is possible.

The main obstacle for you will be whether or not you’re from a country designated by the country in which you would like to work.

Though there are some other subtle reasons, they wouldn’t be hard stops for you. The reason I mentioned above will be.

I comment on this in my recent vlog and go into some other reasons why you’ll find it difficult, but also, why you SHOULDN’T GIVE UP!

  1. Hi, Tom.
I am a non-native English speaker. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico, but I went to college in the USA and recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English and a minor in journalism. I always wanted to work abroad, especially to Korea and Japan. I’ve been working as a college-level English tutor for the last six years. Half of my students are ESL students. I am currently 24, and I want to go to one of these places before I hit my 30’s. I found you today, -my luck- and I want to know what else could I do to raise my prospects of getting hired besides working to obtain my TEFL certification. PS: I love learning languages, and I am currently learning Japanese at an academy and learning Korean by myself. So, I will join you in your online classes.
